Remote Sensing Guides
Remote Sensing Resources > Remote Sensing Guides

Remote Sensing guides have been designed by the CBC that explain how to acquire remotely sensed imagery, how to view imagery, strengths and limitations of remote sensing, and a host of other interesting topics. These guides are tailored for people who want to learn how to benefit from remotely sensed imagery without having to learn the nitty gritty details of how remote sensing works. The overarching goal is to make these data and tools accessible so just about anyone can use them to learn more about the Earth around them at a local or global scale.

Basic Concepts
Fundamental concepts of remote sensing are explained and illustrated. This section can also be used as a reference for concepts mentioned in the other guides on this site.

Locating and Downloading Data
Before we can get very far we need to find images that cover our area of interest. These guides provide information on how to locate, order, and download imagery (in some cases for free).

Viewing Data
Different options for viewing remotely sensed data are presented with some specific instructions on how to view data with common and freely available software. Information is provided to process satellite imagery to make it easier to identify a variety of land cover features.

Image Interpretation and Classification
Once we have an image displayed we will want to be able to understand what we are looking at. The images are an abstract version of the earth and these guides provide pointers to associate features on the ground with what we see on the image.

Project Management
Information useful for managing remote sensing projects and deciding what should be done in-house and when it might be better to hire a consultant.
