Open Source Resources

About
Open source software is defined as software that has the source code freely available and is licensed so that it can be freely distributed and modified as long as appropriate credit is provided to the developers. In the geospatial arena there is growing activity related to the use and development of open source software. This was evidenced by the formation of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) in early 2006. In this section we provide easy access to many open source geospatial resources.

The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) is committed to the development, support, and promotion of open source solutions. Open source software is a viable and evolving resource for conservation organizations around the world. Through the utilization of existing open source applications, the conservation community also has the opportunity to influence the development of these solutions by providing feedback on current and future functionality.
